Somewhere to sit out of the wind.

The brief

An exposed back garden the owners never used. They wanted a level area off the back door with some shelter and a gate for the dog.

The awkward part

Exposure and ground water. Anything built light here rattles apart in a couple of winters.

What we did

Posts set in concrete, joists at 400mm centres with stainless fixings, hardwood boards with a fixed 5mm gap. The screen is slatted rather than solid so the wind passes through instead of pushing on it. Planters double as edge detail and ballast.

Finished

Used from April. The gate has a rising butt so it clears the deck as the boards move.
