Anything built light here rattles apart in a couple of years. Exposure, wind-driven rain and ground water decide most of the detailing.
Decking
Posts set in concrete, joists at 400mm centres rather than the widest spacing the boards allow, stainless fixings, and a consistent board gap so water and needles clear instead of sitting.
Hardwood costs more up front and stays flatter. Treated softwood is a reasonable choice if you're happy to re-coat it. We'll tell you what each option looks like in five years.
Screens, gates and stores
Slatted screens let wind pass through instead of pushing against them, which is why they last where a solid fence fails. Gates are braced and hung on hinges that allow for timber moving with the seasons.
Bin stores, log stores, bike sheds and planters that double as edge detail and ballast.
Exterior repairs
Rotten fascia and soffit, window sills, porch joinery and cladding repairs. We cut back to sound timber, piece in and prime the end grain before it goes up — the bit that gets skipped is usually why the last repair failed.
